Former Students Create 'Northwest Arkansas Online Metal Community'

August 30, 2006

The Arkansas Traveler reports:

What would you get if you crossed a heavy metal musician/radio DJ with a computer geek? If you displeased the gods, you would probably end up with a plethora of songs chock full of guitar solos and lyrics about UNIX and HTML. If you were good little boys and girls, however, you just might end up with something like the Northwest Arkansas Online Metal Community (NWAOMC).

The NWAOMC, an online message board, was the brainchild of Page Townsley, guitarist and singer for the local heavy metal band VORE and former host of "The Weekly Beating Metal Radio Show" at Fayetteville's 104.9 The X. Townsley, a 37 year-old former UA student, originally started the Web site so that fans of his radio show would have easy access to information about upcoming heavy metal concerts in the region.

Soon after the site was started, however, Townsley decided to transform it into an interactive message board, he said, so that area heavy metal musicians and fans would have a place not only to find out about shows, but also to network with one another. Born in the fall of 2004, the NWAOMC grew quickly and began to take on a life of its own. Because of the site's increasing popularity, Townsley soon registered a domain specifically for the message board: www.nwametal.com.
