GREAT WHITE Nightclub Fire: Club Owners' Bankruptcy Petition Finalized

August 19, 2006

The Associated Press reports that a court has accepted a bankruptcy petition from the owners of a nightclub where 100 people died in a 2003 fire started during a GREAT WHITE concert, freeing them from potential civil liability, their lawyer said.

Jeffrey and Michael Derderian, owners of The Station nightclub, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy last September, saying their debts far exceeded their assets. They released a statement Wednesday (August 16) saying it had been accepted in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

The Derderians said they would continue making voluntary payments to the families of four employees who were killed in the fire.

"While we are deeply aware that no amount of money could ever provide solace to those affected, we remain fully committed to doing all we can to assist those affected by this tragedy for as long as we are able to do so," the brothers' statement said.

The Derderians are among dozens of defendants who have been sued in federal court by fire survivors and relatives of those killed. Eight of the victims lived or worked in Connecticut.
