HARPTALLICA: Translating METALLICA Songs For The Harp
August 31, 2007Samantha Morgan of 2TheAdvocate.com reports: When you think of METALLICA, does the image of women playing the harp enter your mind? Didn't think so. However, there is a new cover band on the scene doing just that.
After completing the masters program in early 2006 at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., Ashley Toman moved to Louisiana with her husband. Working as a freelance musician, performing mostly classical pieces at weddings and teaching harp lessons during the day, she came up with the idea to translate her favorite METALLICA songs for the harp.
"I play the harp, and I like METALLICA," Toman said with a laugh when I asked how she came up with the idea. "My husband, he's into heavy metal. He would always play METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN and MEGADETH. After a while of hearing it, I just really started to like it.
"I would be in the car by myself, and I would put [METALLICA] on," she added. "Then I started thinking about how I could play this for the harp."
