HATEBREED Frontman Talks Horror Movies

December 23, 2009

James Zahn of Fangoria.com recently conducted an interview with vocalist Jamey Jasta of Connecticut hardcore/metal masters HATEBREED. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Fangoria.com: Some of our readers may not be aware that you have a clothing line and a label in addition to your bands — the filmic realm might be the next step in that evolution.

Jasta: It would be nice, even if it was just placing music in different films. I've talked with Ghost House Underground a bunch of different times and they've had me submit stuff. You always have to find new horizons. If you love it and care about it, that's what matters. Every night on the bus I try to enjoy a horror film, so for me it's something that would just be fun to do to begin with.

Fangoria.com: What are some horror films that have stuck with you over the years?

Jasta: I love "The Descent". I actually wrote to Neil Marshall on Facebook to say how much the movie really made me feel claustrophobic, and I thought it was just a killer film. Recently, there's been so many of them but I even really like the last "Halloween", but I know it got a mixed reaction.

Fangoria.com: I actually really liked it too. I was the odd man out here at Fango.

Jasta: Yeah, I dug it. I mean, it's a remake so you have to take it for what it is. I also liked "Let The Right One In" and "30 Days Of Night". I saw the director [David Slade] speak at the Toronto convention and was really happy after that to see how well it did. I saw it opening night, and from the graphic novel on knew it would be a great film.

Fangoria.com: Since you'll likely be touring on this album cycle for awhile, what's next? Any chance for KINGDOM OF SORROW or ICEPICK to return?

Jasta: I've actually been working on both. It's really a matter of scheduling. Having three big HATEBREED releases come out within the last year, I wanna make sure we're not over-saturating the fans with too much music, but I gave Kirk [Windstein] who's also in DOWN and CROWBAR some song ideas. We're really excited to now announce that we're re-signing with Relapse Records and will try to get that new KINGDOM OF SORROW out next year. HATEBREED is going to Europe in January and February with MACHINE HEAD, but before and after that I'd like to get all of the ideas tied up and off the tape and finished for KINGDOM OF SORROW. As far as ICEPICK goes, there's so many guest spots on that one — guest spots on every track — it's a studio project that will probably come out either late next year or early 2011.
