May 11, 2003

The premiere edition of the resurrected "Headbanger's Ball" aired Saturday night (May 10) on MTV2. The first week's show was hosted by METALLICA and featured videos by KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, GODSMACK, SUPERJOINT RITUAL and SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, among others.

GODSMACK vocalist Sully Erna, whose May 1 performance in Cleveland was apparently shot for a future installment of the program, recently told Launch that being on the return of the "Headbanger's Ball" benefits both MTV2 and GODSMACK. "'Headbanger's Ball' was a good thing for us to do," he said. "We're really trying to promote this production that's on this tour, and when they invited us to do that we thought it would be a really good move. Not only to bring back the 'Headbanger's Ball', which I thought there's never enough rock on MTV anyways, but to the point where it's nice for people to see a little bit of what we're doing out here."

The 2003 version of "Headbanger's Ball" is based on the popular late '80s-early '90s video show dedicated to heavy rock and metal. Rob Zombie will host the next three episodes of the program.
