LZZY HALE Says Next HALESTORM Album Will Have 'A Lot Of Energy To It'
October 16, 2014Kristyn Clarke of PopCultureMadness.com conducted an interview with HALESTORM singer/guitarist Lzzy Hale, drummer Arejay Hale and bassist Josh Smith on September 27 at The Shindig Music Festival in Baltimore. You can now watch the chat below. A couple of excerpts follow below (transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET).
On the progress of the recording sessions for HALESTORM's follow-up to 2012's Grammy-winning sophomore effort, "The Strange Case Of…":
Lzzy: "This next record, we're doing it very differently than the last two. We're recording, all of us, live, together in one room for most of the tracks. And it's… I don't know… It's got a lot of energy to it, more so than the last two records we've had."
Arejay: "We've always been a primarily live band too, so it's exciting to get to the studio and try to capture that energy. We really haven't done that yet."
Lzzy: "We're used to tracking separately on our past records, so, basically, the first two days are all the drums, then you do all the bass guitar, all the guitars, and then I go sing — on separate days. And this way, when you're all in one room, and when you hit 'record,' all of us are being recorded, everyone's bleeding through each other's mics. So if one person screws up, we've gotta do the whole thing over again. All of us are in."
Arejay: "It's a real challenge. You have to play it right every time."
On how much material the band is recording for the upcoming third album:
Lzzy: "It was hard to narrow down, because we had so many favorites, so we basically had to… we had to decide, 'Okay, which songs go together and, like, complement each other? And even though I really like this song over here, it doesn't go with the rest of them. So we'll [have to put it aside and use it] for something else in the future.' But yeah, it's always hard to narrow this stuff down. And it's hard to know what you want to do on a next record too. It's hard to decide, 'Okay, what do we wanna say?'"
"The Strange Case Of…" yielded two chart-topping rock singles in "Freak Like Me" and the Grammy-winning "Love Bites (So Do I)" .
HALESTORM debuted two new songs — "Heartbreaker" and "Mayhem" — at shows in Tennessee and England this past spring.
HALESTORM will embark on a U.S. tour later this fall, beginning on November 11 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
