NILE's KARL SANDERS: 'This Is The Music We Love And That Comes First'
August 16, 2007Shawn Macomber of The Telegraph recently conducted an interview with NILE mainman Karl Sanders.
"There are people who will accuse us of doing the same old NILE thing, but you know . . . we like what we do," Sanders said of the band's musical approach. "That's the reason we do it. That doesn't mean we stand still, and right now we're just really happy play around with ideas that are a little bit fresh for us without abandoning our sound or style."
The band's latest offering, "Ithyphallic", is another stone in the foundation of the new metal order, exceeding 2005's "Annihilation of the Wicked".
"There was a real feeling of aliveness in the rehearsal room while we were writing this record, very much a feeling of being vital," Sanders confirmed. "If you listen closely, you'll hear the band twisting riffs into different time signatures, using newer, more complicated picking combinations and basically finding a thousand other little different ways to continue doing our thing.
"I think people radically underestimate what it takes to build these kinds of songs, both lyrically and musically," he said. "The fact that we may play 'em nice and make it easy on people's ears — relatively speaking — is just evidence of hard work. A song like 'What Can Be Safely Written' — there's got to be 20-something time changes in there and 13 different time signatures. We play it smooth enough that it goes over people's heads."
On the band's long-term plans, Sanders said, "When we started this band we were hoping to play some shows or maybe make a record. Certainly we weren't envisioning doing it fulltime and traveling the world and all that. That was beyond our conception. We just wanted to play metal, the music that made us happy. Really and truly that's still the bottom-line ethic of this band. And no business circumstance or record company or touring opportunity is going to break that. This is the music we love and that comes first."
