Norwegian Hard Rockers MOHAMMED Apologize For Band Name In Wake Of Prophet Drawing Protests

February 10, 2006

Frightened by the Muslim riots all over the world due to Mohammed cartoons, Norwegian hard rock band MOHAMMED have issued a press release to apologize if they have offended any Muslims with their band name. According to the members of the group, they chose the band moniker because it "sounded cool."

MOHAMMED (web site),who are said to "rehash the plummeting chord strums of BLACK SABBATH and KISS and fuse them with early 1980s thrash scene riffing (think METALLICA) to come up with their own bastard offspring from those bands' glory years" (Daily Vault),released their full-length debut, "Blackbomber", last year via Playground Music.

Cartoons depicting Islam's revered Prophet Mohammed were originally published in a Danish newspaper, and subsequently reprinted in a Norwegian paper and others around the world.

At least 11 people have been killed this year in protests over the cartoons, one of which showed the Prophet Mohammed wearing a bomb-shaped turban, according to Reuters.

Muslims consider any portrayal of the Prophet blasphemous, let alone one showing him as a terrorist.

"We demand stiff penalties without leniency against those who deride the Prophet Mohammed," Abdel-Rahman al-Sudeis, a prominent Saudi Arabian cleric in Islam's holiest city of Mecca, told worshippers, according to Reuters. "With one voice, millions of Muslims around the world are defending the Prophet of God."
