SCORPIONS Guitarist MATTHIAS JABS: 'I Can't Think About Stopping'
September 19, 2007Shawn Jam Hill of The Ottawa Citizen recently spoke to SCORPIONS guitarist Matthias Jabs about the band's latest album, "Humanity - Hour 1", and the band's longevity.
"I can't think about stopping," admits Jabs. "I love music, everything revolves around music. I am 51 years old, this is my life. Let's say in five years we decided to stop playing, it would be a maximum of six weeks before Klaus [Meine; vocals], Rudolf [Schenker; guitar] or I would call each other and try to play again. We play everywhere, Asia, South America. We are exceedingly popular in Brazil."
Metal has a diehard following and there is no other genre of music that so riles up its devotees. "Jazz or pop would never bring out that emotion, aggression that needs to come out," concedes Jabs in his elegant German lilt. "I mean, except for car racing, what else brings out energy in people? There is sanctity in heavy metal music, it is attitude and emotion, the listener feels it talking to them."
Constantly touring "keeps it fresh, we are so used to it," expounds Jabs, a man who feels blessed with his place in the world. "We get to see the world, meet many nice people and we get paid quite well!"
