250 Seattleites Try Their Luck At SUPERNOVA Singer Gig

March 21, 2006

Athima Chansanchai of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer is reporting that 250 Seattleites who tried their luck at the weekend's worth of casting calls for the second season of CBS's "Rock Star" — a show that found a replacement for INXS' frontman last year.

This year's group is SUPERNOVA, a new band of old hands: Tommy Lee, former drummer for MÖTLEY CRÜE, bassist Jason Newsted of METALLICA and guitarist Gilby Clarke of GUNS N' ROSES. The band will record an album to be co-written and produced by Butch Walker — songwriter/producer for AVRIL LAVIGNE and PINK — for a fall release in anticipation of a world tour starting in early 2007.

"Seattle's got to represent," Sarah Bickle said, her face still lit up from an audition in which the cropped-cut blonde belted out "What's Going On" by 4 NON-BLONDES, a song heard at the Crocodile Café several times that day. "It's got the musicians."

Mark Burnett Productions talent producer Dean Houser, who oversaw the auditions, said there's a reason Seattle is a must-stop on a casting-call tour that takes them around the world.

"You always know you get the gritty rock 'n' roll here," he said. "They're just bringing it."
