SHADOWS FALL Frontman: 'I Look At What We've Done And It Blows Me Away'
July 15, 2006Scott Iwasaki of the Deseret Morning News recently conducted an interview with SHADOWS FALL frontman Brian Fair. A few excerpts from the chat follow:
On the group's decision to release "Fallout From the War", a CD composed of six new songs, a few covers and some older SHADOWS FALL remakes.
"We didn't want the fans to wait until early 2007 for an all-new full-length CD. So we worked up some songs that we had started but didn't finish during the recording of the last album, 'The War Within'. We also recorded three cover tunes and re-recorded a couple of songs that were only available on a Japanese release."
"It was a blast going into the studio and finishing up the six songs that we didn't finish while recording the last album. But it was a blast remaking 'Deadworld', which was a demo that got us signed to a record company in the first place. And it was good being able to re-record the song 'This Is My Own' that, until now, had only been released in Japan."
On the band's early years:
"We were not really thinking too much of what we were playing as much as we just wanted to have a good time. We were pretty low key. But as we began playing, things started happening. And we were able to land a spot on Ozzfest. And that threw some attention our way. Now I look at what we've done and it blows me away."
On being nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005 for Best Metal Performance for the track "What Drives the Weak":
"That was totally unexpected, but it was cool. We did the Grammy thing, and it was pretty much sit around until the cameras started rolling. But the after-show parties were awesome."
On the fact that the band's success has come at a manageable pace:
"We didn't just sign to a label overnight and start playing arenas the next day. We have experienced countless blown tires and motors in our tour van. We've had ceilings collapse on us during club shows and we've had our share of being on the road day in and night out. And I'm glad we went through it all. It's made us appreciate the success. And it's toughened us up for the future. Going through all those happenings solidified our resolve to continue."
