SHOK PARIS And CRYPTKICKER To Headline WJCU Benefit Concerts

Cleveland metal legends SHOK PARIS and recently reunited death metallers CRYPTKICKER will headline WJCU's 2010 Radiothon benefit concerts, set to take place February 19-20, 2010 at The Breakfast Club in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Breakfast Club is a venue co-owned by guitarist Billy Morris (WARRANT, BILLY MORRIS BAND). Admission is $7 each night. The shows start at 7:00 p.m. All proceeds will be donated to Cleveland college radio station WJCU.

VENOMIN JAMES will perform a special all-instrumental set. Their singer, Jim Meador, was called to duty by the U.S. Army to serve in Afghanistan, where the fighting has recently intensified. The Cleveland heavy metal community's thoughts and prayers are with him for a safe return.

"I organized these two benefit concerts to do what I could to help the station," says WJCU "Metal On Metal" host Bill Peters. "We had an overwhelming number of bands offer to play for us. The heavy metal community, both bands and fans, have always been very supportive of WJCU over the years."

WJCU is a non-commercial, non-profit college radio station based out of John Carroll University. The station broadcasts to the Northeast Ohio community on the 88.7 FM frequency and worldwide on the Internet at www.wjcu.org.

"Unfortunately, our University-provided operating budget has been cut again this year and is significantly less now than it was 10 years ago," says WJCU general manager Mark Krieger. "Every penny of the money donated to Radiothon is used by WJCU to meet our ever-increasing technology and operational expenses, allowing us to maintain and improve WJCU in a way that accommodates needed services such as our improved web presence, podcasting, playlisting, and more opportunities to produce new community-based arts and public affairs programming."

Krieger adds, "Over 90% of our programming is music. WJCU covers the local music scene with artist interviews and in-studio concerts, playing demo tapes and local releases, and keeping listeners abreast of who is playing where in the Cleveland area."

WJCU broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year.

"We have a dedicated staff and some veteran heavy metal DJs," says Peters. "Mitch Capka ('Kick Out The Jams') and I, for example, have just under 60 years combined of broadcasting between us alone. All of us on the staff, the community members and students, volunteer to do our shows each week purely out of our love for the music. "

WJCU's Radiothon runs from Sunday, February 14 to Sunday, February 21, 2010. Listeners can call 216-397-4438 anytime during this time period to make a pledge. The station's goal is to raise $40,000.

"It is a well-known fact to music industry insiders that Cleveland is the best college radio market in the world," comments Peters. "When my European metal friends travel overseas to visit me, they are amazed while we are driving around the city at what they can hear anytime of day on the radio. We have five powerful stations — WBWC 88.3, WJCU 88.7, WCSB 89.3, WRUW 91.1 and WOBC 91.5 — offering unique programing not heard on commercial radio. Who needs an iPod or subscription satellite radio when you have this kind of great music on the free airwaves to listen to? This is truly a special place."
