STRYPER Performs BLACK SABBATH's 'Heaven And Hell' In San Antonio (Video)

March 17, 2011

Video footage of Christian hard rockers STRYPER performing a cover version of the BLACK SABBATH classic "Heaven And Hell" this past Tuesday (March 15) at Backstage Live in San Antonio, Texas can be viewed below.

In a recent interview with RockConfidential.com, STRYPER guitarist/vocalist Michael Sweet was asked if there were any songs that the band was considering recording for its new covers album, "The Covering", that eventually "didn't make the cut." "There were some songs we were thinking about and decided we probably shouldn't," Sweet replied. "There were some OZZY songs, some MAIDEN songs, some PRIEST songs. We tried our best to be appropriate with the lyrical choices. Some may argue, 'How can they justify doing a SABBATH song?' If you read the words to 'Heaven And Hell', those are lyrics that STRYPER would've written. There's nothing wrong with those lyrics. They're absolutely dead on the money. We wanted to solidify the fact that we're as serious about our faith as we've ever been by doing the original song 'God'. I think 'God' is one of the most powerful songs we've ever done."

STRYPER will take part in an autograph-signing session on March 19 at 1 p.m. at Rock Of Ages in Garden City, Michigan (approximately 20 minutes outside of Detroit). The band will be perform later that night at the Harpos concert theater in Detroit.

"The Covering" sold around 4,600 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 175 on The Billboard 200 chart. The band's previous CD, 2009's "Murder By Pride", opened with 5,900 units to land at No. 73.

Produced by frontman Michael Sweet, "The Covering" is unlike any previous STRYPER recording in that it's a collection of cover songs from bands that inspired them and helped to shape their sound and musical identity, including hits from JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN, LED ZEPPELIN, KANSAS and many others. "The Covering" will also include "God", a new original recording from STRYPER.
