TIAMAT's JOHAN EDLUND: 'I Worship The Devil, But I Believe In God'
September 27, 2003TIAMAT frontman Johan Edlund explained his religious philosophy during a recent interview with Sweden's Close-Up magazine.
"It feels like I worship the Devil, but believe in God," Edlund said. "When I laid down the vocals [for TIAMAT's new album] at home [in Hamburg, Germany], I did everything conceivable to get into the songs as much as possible. When I sang the more blasphemous lyrics, I hung upside-down crosses over the singing booth. Then I was gonna take the plane to mix the record [in Finland]. I'm pretty nervous about flying, so I downed whiskey at the airport and then it hit me: 'Shit, I forgot to turn the crosses back.' I called my girlfriend and asked her to turn them. And then when I landed in Finland, she had to turn them upside down again. It felt good to have the right guy on my side in the air and the right guy at my side in the studio. Maybe it sounds a little weird… but at least it leads to inspiration and new songs."
TIAMAT's eighth studio album, "Prey", is due on October 27 through Century Media Records. The self-produced CD, which is being described as one of Edlund's most personal recorded statements to date, was mixed and mastered at Finnvox Studios in Helsinki, Finland. Although it is not a concept album, there is a strong unifying theme running through each of the 13 tracks.
TIAMAT recently shot a promotional video for their new single "Cain" with Revolver Film Company's (www.revolver.se) award-winning director Patric Ullaeus (DIMMU BORGIR, WITHIN TEMPTATION, PASSENGER). "Cain", due on September 29 through Century Media, will contain a radio edit of the album opener, the straight, up-tempo rocker "Love In Chains", and an exclusive cover version of the old W.A.S.P. classic "Sleeping (In The Fire)" — all packaged in a nice digipak with cover artwork by Edlund himself.
