TOMMY LEE's Reality Show Causing Tension Between Chancellor And University Faculty

October 14, 2004

Jenna Johnson of the Daily Nebraskan is reporting that the latest reality show featuring MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee is causing tension between Chancellor Harvey Perlman and some members of the faculty at University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Wes Peterson, president of the Academic Senate, said he heard from a number of faculty members who were concerned by the chancellor’s decision to sign with NBC to film an "unscripted show" on UNL's campus and skeptical of the chancellor's reasons.

"No one was consulted," he said. "But I can understand why this is the case. If the chancellor had seen some of this reaction, he might not have made the same decision."

Gerry Harbison, professor of chemistry, said criticism of the chancellor's decision is widespread among faculty, who are concerned their reputations — along with UNL's — might be tarnished by the show.

He said he and many other faculty members couldn’t understand why a decision that so negatively affects faculty would be approved without the consent of at least a few faculty members.

Harbison said the decision ruins a lot of what the faculty has worked to build up. He doesn’t understand why a university that has a poet laureate on its faculty would have to resort to reality television for publicity.

"We're not that desperate for publicity," he said. "Too many people at the university have a complex that we are not good enough to sell ourselves for what we really are." Read more.
