UNEARTH Frontman: 'We Don't Have Any Lofty Goals For Ourselves'

September 8, 2006

Scott Iwasaki of the Deseret Morning News reports:

Trevor Phipps, vocalist for the band UNEARTH, says he knows he may never get rich doing his job but there's more to it than making money.

"The radio doesn't play the stuff we play," Phipps said by phone from his home near Boston. "But it pays the bills. We get to tour the world and get to share something we created. Of course, we have to tour eight months out of the year in order for us to pay the bills, but it's the job we chose for a living."

UNEARTH — which also features bassist John "Slo" Maggard, drummer Mike Justian and guitarists Ken Susi and Buz McGrath — formed eight years ago. "We don't have any lofty goals for ourselves. We just look at our situation and make goals that are realistic.

"First was to form a band. Second was to play some local gigs. Third was to record an (extended-play) CD. Fourth was to record a full-length CD and fifth was to tour. We've done those, and the next step is to tour longer and farther. We're looking to go back to Japan, Australia and Europe within the next months and years."

The band's latest album, "III: In the Eyes of Fire", was recorded with the help of producer Terry Date, who has worked with PANTERA and SOUNDGARDEN. "Terry brought a laid-back feeling to the sessions," said Phipps. "He works with the idea of making a band sound as organic as it can. He doesn't overproduce and lets the band do what it does best, which is to play. He does have some good ideas, and he knows what will sound good."
