Windsor Residents Complain About Volume Of ORION MUSIC + MORE Soundchecks

June 8, 2013

According to The Windsor Star, a number of residents have called Windsor, Ontario, Canada mayor Eddie Francis' office to complain about the volume of Friday's soundchecks for this weekend's Orion Music + More, the music and lifestyle festival created by METALLICA and their friends at C3 Presents, which is taking place June 8-9 at Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan.

"This is unbelievable, it's so loud," said Marg Wiseman, who lives in an apartment building across from Belle Isle. "My dog started barking when I opened the balcony doors. Enough is enough." She added that Orion was the loudest thing she has heard come from Belle Isle, which just last week hosted its annual Indy-Car race, the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.

"We had concerts last year but nothing like this," Wiseman said.

"You can feel the vibrations on the wall," Wiseman's neighbour Hiba Bakeet added. "Do they get permission from Canada? They should. The music is really close to the buildings in Windsor. And it's going to be worse on the weekend."

Just one day earlier, on Thursday (June 6),City of Windsor spokesman James Moore told the Detroit Free Press there was "very little concern on our side" about Orion disturbances. The festival site — including the 1.3 million watts of sound at the main stage — is about 2,000 feet from neighborhoods along the Windsor riverfront. The music will run from 2 to 10 p.m. each day.

"Hopefully we don't get any real negative backlash on it, but at this point we’re not concerned about the potential for noise," he said.

According to the Detroit Free Press, ticket sales for this year's Orion Music + More have not been announced, but spokeswoman Shelby Meade said she expects a two-day attendance count of about 40,000 — a mix of weekend pass holders and single-day ticket buyers.

METALLICA frontman James Hetfield said on Thursday that it might be many years before Orion breaks even.

"At the end of the day, it's not about us making money," he said. "It's about creating some sort of mark in history."
