Nobody could accuse Arjen Lucassen of not making the effort. The relentless creative brain behind AYREON is legendary for his meticulous approach to music, and the vast catalogue he has amassed over his four-and-a-half decade career as a musician is testament to that unerring dedication to the details. But even the most conscientious of creatives has to let loose on occasion. Lucassen has had an ambivalent relationship with live performance over the years, but when he devotes himself to a task, there is absolutely no room for half-assing it. "An Amazing Flight Through Time" was recorded during AYREON's six shows in Tilburg, in the great man's native Netherlands, in September 2025. An unparalleled celebration of the vivid and vital progressive rock that has defined his career, these performances thrilled the 15,000 attendees beyond measure, and a fully fledged live album to commemorate the event was the next logical step. A dazzling, full-throttle sprint through 30 years of AYREON music, with a few songs from other projects thrown in, this is aimed squarely at the fans, but anyone with a liking for wildly melodic and progressive music will find this an excellent primer for Lucassen's work.

There is a lot of music to digest here. 29 tracks deep and impeccably sequenced, "An Amazing Flight Through Time" is a joyous trawl through the last three decades, and a glowing advertisement for the virtuoso excellence of the musicians that Lucassen has brought into his world. Not quite a greatest hits album — too many 10-minute epics and cherished deep cuts — but full of exquisite melodies and gentle intricacy, it grabs highlights from most of the albums released under the AYREON banner, weaving them into a lavish representation of the febrile industry and preposterous ambition going on in the Dutchman's unique mind. A mind-boggling cast of vocalists, including Anneke Van Giersbergen, Damian Wilson (HEADSPACE / ARENA) and Tommy Karevik (KAMELOT),help to bring these lithe and lyrical songs to life, and immaculate ensemble performances from Lucassen's band frequently verge on the completely flawless. If it's grit and rough edges you crave, look elsewhere, but when it comes to progressive rock perfection, AYREON remains a peerless force to be reckoned with.

While best experienced in one suffocating, sugary hit, there are several notable high points for fans to savor. Renditions of "Childhood", "Dragon On The Sea" and "Sign" sparkle early on in the journey — the latter thanks to gorgeous vocals from Heather Findlay and Anneke Van Giersbergen. A trilogy of songs from 2013's "The Theory Of Everything" is so aggressively beautiful that it deserves its own standing ovation, and a brace of blistering, prog metal anthems from Lucassen's STAR ONE project bring some fire and force to an otherwise predominantly serene endeavor. Best of all, several songs from his magnificent sixth album "The Human Equation" (2004) are elegantly resurrected and played with such classy and soulful feel and precision that they alone justify the colossal effort made by everyone involved. As for Lucassen himself, his tenure as master of ceremonies is pulled off with humility and quiet charm: AYREON is his band and represents his vision, but there is never any doubt that it is the songs themselves that are king here. An amazing flight, indeed.
