Heavy metal and R&B may seem like two styles of music that don't really go together, but don't tell that to SLEEP THEORY. The Memphis, Tennessee, rock band has made a name for itself by merging heavy metal, R&B, metalcore and even some pop, creating a hook-filled sound that's truly all its own. That unique style is partly why SLEEP THEORY, who has only been around since 2020, are already making a name for itself across the rock world and gaining fans.

SLEEP THEORY started as U.S. Army vet and vocalist Cullen Moore's solo project, blossoming into a full-fledged band. The group released their 2023 debut EP, "Paper Hearts", on Epitaph Records, and now, they return with their debut full-length, "Afterglow".

The term radio-friendly comes to mind when listening to "Afterglow", as the album has tracks that really sound pristine and near-perfect, which, of course, is popular on the radio in 2025. That doesn't mean there isn't heart in here, though. The crisp production doesn't get in the way of the message, and songs such as album opener "Static" and subsequent cut "Hourglass" are brimming with emotional vocals, passionate screams and sky-high riffing. "Ill" continues on that journey, showing off Moore's ability to scream, in addition to his trademark clean vocals.

While all of the songs on "Afterglow" are strong, "Fallout" stands out. Here, Moore channels Lajon Witherspoon of SEVENDUST with soulful, guttural singing, and the instruments swell and caress his vocals as if they were always meant to be together. The song's chorus is melodic and soaring, again recalling SEVENDUST. Of all the metalcore bands out there right now, SLEEP THEORY really embrace their melodic side more than most.

While "Fallout" is melodic, SLEEP THEORY isn't afraid to get heavy on "Afterglow", with "Parasite" and "Paralyzed" serving up brutally heavy riffing, blasting rhythms and raw vocals. Meanwhile, the album's title track, as well as closing track "Words are Worthless", show a softer side of the band in amped-up ballads, which really brings Moore's voice front and center.

On "Afterglow", SLEEP THEORY does it all, continuing their journey of delivering huge vocal hooks, strong dynamics and rousing rhythms, all packed into a very modern-sounding collection. It will be a pleasure to see what they do next.
