You didn't realize that longtime SCORPIONS drummer Herman Rarebell had a solo album called "Too Late for Peace…" on Poland's Selfmadegod Records, did you? That's because he doesn't. Grindcore act HERMAN RAREBELL includes members of Selfmadegod brethren THIRD DEGREE and ANTIGAMA. "Too Late for Peace" has been released as a 3" disc and is tried and true, dyed in the wool grindcore with a thick crust coating, not to mention a bit of melody and groove. The vocals can be a real crack-up too.
The 15 tracks in 19 minutes on "Too Late for Peace…" serve as a satisfying and wonderfully grating dose of classic grindcore with the speed, ferocity, and maniacal gruff and screamy vocals. In other words, all the things that made you love the work of bands like TERRORIZER, NAPALM DEATH, and DOOM. As a matter of fact, the disc includes not one, but two covers of vintage NAPALM DEATH tunes from the seminal first album ("Scum"),"Multinational Corporations" and "Instinct of Survival". DOOM's "Rags to Riches" is even better, that rolling rhythm and gnarly shout-along chorus a fine tribute.
The band's originals are nothing to sneeze at either. "Sample to Taste Pt. 1" and "Sample to Taste Pt. II" start the album off in grand fashion, the impossibly fast drumming of the former, and nut-job vocals, wicked bass rumble, and filthy chorus of the latter demonstrating what makes grindcore so damn much fun. Whether it is the 56-second madness of "Alcoholocaust", the alternating steamroller crush and frantic delirium of "Observation", or the punky speeding of "Cage of Life", the end result is the same: a wide-ass smile and a severe case of whiplash.
