…Of Entropy and Life Denial…

Is it too much to ask that a black metal band remain true to their original lethal vision and retain high production values? France's MERRIMACK doesn't think so — they offer up a furious slab of unadulterated, vicious black metal anger on "Of Entropy and Life Denial". And it sounds HUGE, with big, l...

The Cult is Alive

That buzzing guitar sound, the way the songs groove in a rock and roll kind of way, the shroud of malevolence darkening the proceedings, and a fuck-off punk rock attitude. This is DARKTRHONE all right. On the duo's 12th album, "The Cult is Alive", Fenriz and N.Culto sound as convincing as ever, the...

Don't Fear the Reaper

I'll be honest with you here; I was a little taken aback at Tue Madsen's crystal clear, thick 'n' rubbery sound mix the first time I heard WITCHERY's "Don't Fear the Reaper". By that I mean that I was expecting the rawer, bloodied thrash sounds of "Dead, Hot and Ready" or "Symphony for the Devil", ....

Kontamination

Limited to 2,000 hand-numbered copies, Southern Lord offers to the grim U.S. black metal masses "Kontamination" from France's HAEMOTH. A limited edition (300 copies) picture disc was also issued, but has sold out. The "as real as it gets" cliché truly applies in the case of this incredibly abrasive...

10 Steps to Hell

What in the world is going on this month? Lately, it seems that every other CD coming my way is a gem, the latest two beasts from Candlelight. The first, the Hell-born rage of 1349's "Hellfire" and now the deathly fire thrash of GRIMFIST's "10 Steps to Hell". Whereas 2003's "Ghouls of Grandeur" debu...

Envaatnags Eflos Solf Esgantaavne

One of the truly underground bands of the black metal elite, Finland's HORNA do much more than create grim feeling and cold atmosphere (though they do both exceedingly well). On "Envaatnags Eflos Solf Esgantaavne", the music is unequivocally black metal in the northernmost sense, but HORNA takes car...

Reclaim the Beat

DEFLESHED has been in existence for well over a decade with several releases to their name. Presumably, "Reclaim the Beat" would represent the culmination of those years of honing songwriting skills and improving musicianship. This is not good. I'll cut a band a fair amount of slack for not being th...

Eulogy IV (Limited Edition)

Driving to work in a thunderstorm, the morning shadowed by a dark sky, lightning cracks sounding, trying not to hydroplane, as I watch a series of accidents along the roadway, the backdrop is perfect as the re-release of NACHTMYSTIUM's "Eulogy IV" blasts from the stereo. The EP was first released on...
