AUTOPSY's CHRIS REIFERT Discusses Reunion

February 25, 2010

Jimmy Christ of Terrorizer.com recently conducted an interview with AUTOPSY frontman Chris Reifert. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Terrorizer.com: With a new ABSCESS record, "The Dawn of Inhumanity", on the way and [the upcoming AUTOPSY reunion show at Maryland Deathfest at the end of May], are you pretty busy at the moment?

Chris Reifert: Little pockets of time, just like everything else. When you have bunch of things going on, everyone's trying to find the right thing. Timing-wise it worked out good because we finished the ABSCESS album and we were waiting for that to come out, and we had this show opportunity in the meantime. It just fell into place; it doesn't always work out that way!

Terrorizer.com: Was the whole process of reunion slow and steady or did you have a view to playing some shows again?

Chris Reifert: It was definitely something that we thought about later, because of those two tracks [newly recorded for the re-issue of "Severed Survival"] and we really had no intention of doing anything else at the time, it was just to make "Severed Survival" something special for the 20th anniversary, make it something special and put a couple of extra songs together. We were definitely happy with those and it was fun to play together again, so that was really cool. We figured that was it, then it came out and interest has just been kinda building and building over the years, and it got to the point where the people at Maryland Deathfest got in touch with us about playing, and it's a really good fest and we've played a couple of times with ABSCESS and it's been really awesome, so when they asked AUTOPSY to do it, we figured, "Shit, if there's a time for us to do something, this is probably it, so let's go!" so we agreed to do it.

Terrorizer.com: Are you nervous?

Chris Reifert: Nah, I don't feel I should be.

Terrorizer.com: Do you think there's a chance of anything else?

Chris Reifert: Well, we're just gonna see what happens after Maryland at this point, we'll see, one step at a time here. Stay tuned on that.

Terrorizer.com: Has the cult following that AUTOPSY have gained over the years really taken you by surprise?

Chris Reifert: Y'know, it seems it's been there whole time I guess, it just built up more and more. When we were broken up, the interest just got stronger and stronger, which is how it goes sometimes. More people got into metal and we're at a point now where people who weren't even born when the albums were coming out are getting them and telling their friends about it. It just kinda snowballs, so now it's just at a point where it's kinda crazy. We never woulda thought this many people would be into it this much later.

Terrorizer.com: Are you excited about the next few months?

Chris Reifert: Yeah, there's a lot to keep sorted out in my mind. All of us, there's just a lot to balance and keep on top off. It's good though, it's either that or be bored, or wish there were things going on. It's going to be even more of a busy year than usual, I think it's great. I love it! It's gonna go by really fast and think we're gonna have a whole lot of fun.
