COLDPLAY Denies JOE SATRIANI's Copying Claim In Court
April 7, 2009In a legal response filed in a Los Angeles court on Monday, the British rock band COLDPLAY denied that its song "Viva La Vida" had illegally copied portions of the song "If I Could Fly" by the rock guitarist Joe Satriani, The Associated Press reported.
In December, Satriani filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against COLDPLAY, which in February won the song of the year Grammy Award for "Viva La Vida". At the time the suit was filed, COLDPLAY issued a statement saying the resemblance between the songs was "entirely coincidental" and that "Joe Satriani is a great musician." But in its legal filing, the band has changed its tune, saying that "If I Could Fly" should not receive copyright protection because it "lacks originality," The Associated Press said.
