DJs Fired Over 'KORN Gave HEAD To God' Phrase

Steven Mayer of The Bakersfield Californian has issued the following report:

Two Bakersfield radio disc jockeys were fired Friday, two days after they talked on air about an offensive catch phrase that began appearing online following Brian "Head" Welch's recent departure from the rock band KORN.

Rocky Nash and Scott "Snatch the Sidekick" Welter, a pair of DJs who teamed up on rock station KKXX-FM's weekday morning show, were given their final checks Friday, the duo confirmed.

Both agreed that their dismissal came as a result of phone calls from listeners who complained about some of the content of the show on Wednesday.

"During Wednesday's show, we were looking on the Internet for rock news," Welter said Friday. "Especially anything about Brian 'Head' Welch leaving KORN."

The Bakersfield musician's departure from the popular band gained national attention last week.

What Welter and Nash found on several web sites was a double entendre, a not so subtle play on words that poked fun at one of Welch's stated reasons for quitting the hard-edged rock group — that is, to pursue his relationship with Jesus.

By Wednesday, the offensive slogan was being offered for sale online on T-shirts, and it was being discussed on message boards and online forums. [view the now-discontinued design from 313 Merch at this location — Ed.]

So Nash and Welter repeated and talked about the phrase on the air.

It reads, "KORN Gave Head to God."

"We never intended to offend anyone," Welter said. "We pride ourselves on being a family show. Kids and their parents sometimes listen to us before school."

Nash and Welter said they were not endorsing the language. On the contrary, they said they criticized and ridiculed the web sites for publishing the phrase.
