Members Of RAMONES Trying To Save Legendary New York City Club
May 11, 2005Launch Radio Networks reports: Members of the RAMONES, TALKING HEADS, and Bruce Springsteen's E STREET BAND are trying to save a New York City club that's headed for extinction. The artists, including E STREET guitarist Little Steven, original RAMONES drummer Tommy Ramone, TALKING HEADS drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth, Patti Smith, and many others, have joined forces to get CBGB declared a landmark by the city of New York and to keep it from closing. The landlord says the club owners are way behind in their rent, and the venue's lease expires August 31.
In a statement, Tommy Ramone said, "CBGB is a treasure of New York culture. It was the original magnet that drew people from every corner of America to come to New York and participate in its rebirth."
CBGB is often considered the focal point for the American punk rock scene. In the '70s, it was the home base for acts including the RAMONES, BLONDIE, TALKING HEADS, TELEVISION, and PATTI SMITH, among many others.
