SICK OF IT ALL Explains 'That Crazy White Boy S**t' Song

March 21, 2019

SICK OF IT ALL drummer Armand Majidi and bassist Craig Setari spoke to Bionic Buzz about the inspiration for the song "That Crazy White Boy Shit", which appears on the band's twelfth studio album, "Wake The Sleeping Dragon!"

Majidi said: "'That Crazy White Boy Shit' is kind of an ironic title for the song, because it's about the BAD BRAINS and how much the BAD BRAINS were such a huge influence not just on us but on all of hardcore, and the fact that it was four black guys making it. That was one of the aspects of early hardcore that was amazing. It was such a melting pot. And it wasn't like the millennial way of looking at everything through these really racial eyes — everything is broken down, like this race is this, and this race is that. Back then, it was just human — it was people coming together and making music and having a scene."

Added Setari: "In school, the black kids were into hip-hop. And I'd hang out with them sometimes, and they'd be, like, 'Yo, what are you into? You like that crazy white boy shit?' So that's where the term comes from. They used to be, like, 'You like that crazy white boy shit?' and I was, like, 'I like hip-hop too.' And they'd be, like, 'Really? I thought you were into that crazy white boy shit.' 'Nah. I like music, man. It's cool.'"

Continued Majidi: "And that's the irony of the song, because a lot of the stuff that we listen to was created by four black guys from D.C. They were the most talented musicians in the scene at that time, for sure."

Said Setari: "They set the bar for hardcore. Philosophically and musically, they knew how to deliver real-deal hardcore — the best that was ever created. The ROIR cassette — what's better than that? Nothing."

"Wake The Sleeping Dragon!" was released last November via Century Media. The follow-up to 2014's "The Last Act Of Defiance" was produced by Jerry Farley (EVERY TIME I DIE, DEMON HUNTER) over a two-and-a-half-week period at Nova Studios in Staten Island, New York and was mixed and mastered by Tue Madsen (MESHUGGAH, THE HAUNTED, MADBALL). The cover artwork was created by Ernie Parada.

"Wake The Sleeping Dragon!" features guest appearances by RISE AGAINST vocalist/guitarist Tim McIlrath and HOT WATER MUSIC frontman Chuck Ragan.
