SLAYER's KERRY KING: 'We're A Lucky Band With A Regenerating Fan Base'
June 6, 2006Luke O'Neil of Metro New York recently conducted a short interview with SLAYER guitarist Kerry King.
Metro: It seems like you have more devoted fans than other bands.
Kerry: "Our fans are crazy. They're a lot like me: metal fans. The difference is I met a bunch of guys who wanted to start a band. We've always been SLAYER. We never tried or claimed to be anything different. People know when we come around we're gonna put on a show."
Metro: Are you still making new fans?
Kerry: "When we started out it was all kids into us. Now those kids have kids. We're a lucky band with a regenerating fan base."
Metro: How's it been working with Dave [Lombardo] again?
Kerry: "It's like putting on an old pair of shoes and running with it. He's been playing with us live for a few years anyway.
Metro: What does it take to be "metal" these days? Is that something you think about?
Kerry: "Just doing what we do achieves that. That's just who we are, we don't go out of our way."
Metro: So do the hipsters in ironic SLAYER T-shirts piss you off?
Kerry: "Not really. Whether you listen to us or not, you know of us. I saw a kid on a skateboard with a 'Haunting the Chapel' T-shirt the other day. (laughs) I was like, 'You weren't even born when that came out!'"
Metro: Any non-metal inspiration work its way into the new record?
Kerry: "No, I don't have anything like that. Look at my iPod and it's 90 percent metal."
Metro: So what still gets you excited about coming into work at the SLAYER office every day?
Kerry: "When we rehearse new songs there are no vocals. We just rehearse the music. Then, at the end of recording when you hear everything where it's supposed to be and you still get those goosebumps, you know you're doing something right. Playing live too. I like leaving the stage knowing those people out there can say, 'They didn't leave anything on the stage.'"
