GENE SIMMONS' Gift To CHER Auctioned Off
October 6, 2006A table lamp made from a taxidermied armadillo, a gift to actress/singer Cher from Gene Simmons, co-founder of the 1970s rock band KISS, was estimated at $300 to $500 and sold for $3,500 to a phone bidder during a two-day auction of Cher's belongings that ended Wednesday (Oct. 4) in Beverly Hills. About 780 items sold for a total of $3.54 million. Julien's Auctions and New York-based Sotheby's, which ran the sale together, had estimated that sales would reach $1.4 million to $1.6 million.
"It is the ultimate conversation piece," joked auctioneer Leila "Lee" Dunbar, director of Sotheby's collectibles department, during the bidding.
