World Record 'Smoke On The Water' Performance Cancelled

The organizers of the previously announced record-breaking attempt at performing DEEP PURPLE's "Smoke on the Water" with 2,000 guitar players on Sunday, February 18 have decided to cancel the event. They have issued the following statement regarding the matter:

"Thank you for your interest and support in taking part in the world record-breaking attempt at Harrods. We regret to inform you, that due to unforeseen circumstances, we have had to take the unavoidable decision to cancel the world record breaking attempt on Sunday 18th February. We are extremely sorry to disappoint those who were looking forward to this event, and do hope that no inconvenience has been caused. Please pass this message on to those who you know were planning to attend and register on the day."

The record-breaking attempt was being organized by the Harrods department store in London which was hoping to bring in 2,000 players for the event in a bid to break the world record for most guitarists simultaneously playing one song. According to Harrods, the title is currently held by 1,322 people who got together in 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, to rock out on Ritchie Blackmore's classic riff.

Harrods is in the midst of their "Harrods Rocks" promotion, which includes a display of rare guitars and instruments owned by Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood from THE ROLLING STONES, the Edge from U2, Neil Young, Tony Iommi from BLACK SABBATH, Carlos Santana, and Peter Frampton, among others.
